[Herky] Derrell Johnson-Koulianos Statement on His Time with Iowa Football

Curtis, your point about breaking down to build you back up is a very good one. Football is a team sport even more than wrestling where athletes are encouraged to work first for the good of the team in a unified way. "Break the rock!" Iowa banned most social media and Freshmen speaking to the press to ensure that unified message. However, if only a single unified message is allowed, that will reflect the white culture that is Iowa and there will be pressure for blacks to conform to that. Someone as flamboyant as DKJ was will find conformance difficult. The challenge going forward will be to find ways to allow divergent views and actions while maintaining the team unity and effort needed for success. It won't be easy. "Boot camp" sounds like a good way to describe the late summer preseason.

I think it is plausible that KF might not have known about the racial slurs and degradation. He seems to delegate to the coaches and stays out of the weeds. If no one came to him with issues (likely for fear of recrimination), then he may not have known or thought that there was this level of concern. I am not making excuses, but it is as plausible to me as the fact that he would turn a blind eye to it.
And to be honest, as a former collegiate athlete at Iowa, there is always a component of breaking you down to build you up - regardless of race. It is inexcusable to introduce racism into that, but it is not surprising to me. I lived with black football players in the summers and they certainly had love for Hayden Fry and his entire staff, but felt like they were in boot camp.

Put up with KFZs mediocre seasons for a few very good seasons thinking he is a man of character and is not doing anything to hurt the university.
If all these news and statements are true and KFZ knew about them and allowed it then it is a really sad, disturbing and disgusting time to be a fan.
We read about the issues at OSU, at PSU at Mi and MSU and was happy not to have those at UI and now even that is gone.
Very disappointed.

HN took the DJK story down. It was not very plausible to me.
This is all disturbing and sad to me.
Take care everyone!

I am reading where Jaydon McDonald, who transferred out (past couple of years) is going to sue university because of discrimination. I am beyond sad and sick. Bill Yost

DJK was always in the doghouse when he was here. I wonder if his “flashy” personality made him a bad fit with the blue-collar, keep-your-head-down-and-work ethos of Iowa football.
I also wonder if Doyle can be kept on after all this. So many stories coming out about him.
