[Herky] 2 amazing games - but I have questions

    1. At the end of the men’s game, after MSU missed the second free throw and we had the ball down three. Why didn’t Izzo have his team foul us to prevent the 3-point basket?

As for the notion of fouling up three in the final seconds, Izzo dismissed it, even as Iowa made four 3-pointers in a 29-second span.

“No, I didn’t,” Izzo said. “We were supposed to switch that and we didn’t do that very well.”

MSU was out of timeouts to set anything up on defense so went with their normal alignment. A quick foul would have allowed Iowa to score with the clock stopped, then a quick foul by Iowa would have left Iowa enough time to advance the ball for a shot. Proponents of fouling with a three point lead generally want less than 5 seconds on the clock when doing so. 10 seconds is too long to use that strategy.

    1. At the end of the women’s game, I wonder why the IU coach didn’t have the shooter deliberately miss the 2 nd free throw. If Iowa had to rebound and go all the way down the court, I don’t see how we could have made a shot there. Or would we have just called a timeout after the rebound and gotten the ball at midcourt anyway? But there would have been less than 1.5 seconds, maybe not enough time.

“I knew to go tell the ref and be like, ‘You have to go look and see if the time is right,’” Clark said. “And, you know, they basically doubled it at that point. There’s a big difference between 0.8.(seconds) and 1.5 for me to get a shot off like that.”

“They can go to the monitor any time in the last two minutes,” Bluder said, “and I’m glad they did.”

Holmes made both free throws — Indiana coach Teri Moren said had there been that :00.8 on the clock, she might have had Holmes intentionally miss the second free throw — then Bluder called a timeout, which advanced the ball to midcourt.

When you can advance the ball to the front court, 1 second is enough to get a shot off. An Indiana free throw miss would have allowed a two point basket to win.

I actually met up with a friend from grad school. We went to the Final Four together in 1980 and many Iowa games in the 80s and 90s. Wonderful weekend!

I wish we had made plans to meet up! I did run into old Herky members Sue Bailey. It was such a fun weekend!!

My husband has been asking these questions over and over again. Maybe why Izzo blamed the loss on "piss poor coaching"

Heading up to Minneapolis Wednesday!

Go Hawks!

First, I can’t imagine a more incredible return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena than I experienced this weekend. But I’m curious:

I can’t even remember the last time I was in CHA. It opened the year after I left Iowa City so I haven’t been there many times. The experience was a lot of fun, and I loved the ESPN College Gameday – the atmosphere was just electric.

Go Hawks!!
