[Herky] O Line

Very interesting. I would take those stats all day. And I cannot think of
too many long runs that would skew those numbers. Maybe it is perception,
but it seems as though we are seeing less and less YAC from these guys. Call
me real old fashioned, but I grew up with Walter Payton, Herschel Walker,
Barry Davis as the gold standards. The legs churned and they fought like
hell for the extra yardage. I am not 'not' seeing that, but it seems a
little more tame to me.

The interesting thing is that we all agree that the running game is bad.
However when I look at the stats of our top three RB's they are averaging
5.8, 4.9 and 4.5 yards per carry. I think we would all say that this is
really good. So is the problem our perception or what?

I'll take a crack at it:

I think it is an equal distribution of blame for both. If you watch the
line, they are doing 1 contact and then peeling off. IOW, they do not
sustain the block. They do not move their guy away from the ball, but rather
sidestep with them in the direction of the play. Also, they are standing
ground instead of 'moving' their competition. It is not enough to keep in
front of your guy - you need to move him on running plays - back, left,
right, etc. Our guys simply stand them up where they are. Here is where the
running backs own the blame. They run straight into the numbers of their
blocker. They literally go flat against their blockers , which is not ideal
when you need to decide to move left or right. You should have a distance
(arms length) so you can read where the defensive player is moving.
Additionally, If they are told to hit the "5" hole (or between guard and
center), that is where they go, regardless of the congestion. They simply do
not quick-calculate their options. Lastly, they seem to go down a TON from
arm tackles, trip-ups, or just simply not have the bull rush mentality in
heavy traffic.

Also, here is one of my pet peeves. Stanley almost NEVER sells the fake, He
simply hands off the ball and then watches them after a lackluster fake at a
dropback. I know this is petty, but I love it when a player sells the fake
all the way.

I don't think anyone imagined that with the stable of running backs and
fairly experienced O-line we would have such a sorry running game. If we
can't run, we cannot beat good teams.

Is it the guard/center/guard area that we are so weak? Are the running
backs just too slow or not quick enough to hit holes? I just can't
understand why they have so much trouble. It really hurts the passing game
when the running game is impotent.

Someone please enlighten me.

I wonder if the Iowa O line is just not that good due to lesser talent than
normal. Or is it injuries? Or something else?

That pass to #84 was a very tough call.
