[Herky] Iowa Wrestling

Since this is first time of talking wrestling I will give a quick overview of the Iowa team.  What do you real experts out there think about the team this year?


Iowa is ranked 2nd or 3rd in most polls in the early season. Ok State is ranked #1.  PSU and Ohio St are considered the other top teams. It could be a really close team race this year.

       Thomas Gilman is ranked #1 and a solid favorite to win it all this year.  The unknown is a PSU true FR that is really good.

         Cory Clark - is ranked #1.   There are a couple of guys that are right there with him including Tomasello from OSU who has won a title at 125.  Clark is hurt right now - hopefully it is indeed nothing serious.

          This is the first year in the line-up. Many thought Vince Turk a RS FR would be the guy but he got hurt and is out for the year.  Carton is a solid wrestler but probably the most we can hope for is that he  qualifies for the NCAA's

           Brandon is ranked #2. Retherford from PSU is ranked #1 and in a class by himself right now.

REDSHIRT FRESHMAN MURRYSVILLE, PA. FRANKLIN REGIONAL

        This is the first year in the line-up for Michael.  He was a top 10 pfp wrestler his senior year of high school and had a very good redshirt year.  He is currently ranked #5.

              Gunther is the guy right now. He was not highly ranked coming out of high school and I figured him to be a room guy.  But so far as a RS FR he is doing very well.  However the big question mark is whether Alex Marinelli will go as a true FR.  He was the #2 pfp high school wrestler last year and will be the guy if they decide not to redshirt him.  If he goes most think he would be a top 8 type guy but probably not ready to compete for a title.

            Meyer is ranked #7.  Hopefully he has put in the work for a big senior season.  He seems to be more aggressive in the couple of matches I have seen so far this year which is encouraging.

         Brooks is ranked #8 and I could probably repeat what I said about Meyer.  184 is a really tough and deep weight so he could have a good year and still end up #8.

        Wilcke - RS FR is the guy right now. He is really a 184 pounder wrestling up. He is the probable replacement for Brooks next year.  I think he has a bright future but wrestling up a weight I think the most we can hope for is that he qualifies for NCAAs at 197.  Steven Holloway is currently wrestling at 285 until Stoll returns.  Many think he might drop down to 197 after Stoll returns so he might end up being the guy at the end of the season.  While Holloway will be the right size for 197 I think he is at least a year away. Again the best hope is probably that he qualifies for NCAAs.


6'3" 215 LBS

SOPHOMORE KASSON, MINN. KASSON-MANTORVILLE

           Sam is still out due to the knee injury from last year.  Assuming that he gets back to full strength  most see him as the 4th or 5th ranked guy.  Hopefully his lack of mat time due to the injury has not set his development too much.
