Several athletes have failed to make the two deeps or see the playing field and have completed their degrees. One example was Australian kicker Jonny Mullins, who never remotely lived up to his promise. This may be different for players who have academic or discipline problems. Eric Graham was a very promising running back but reportedly had both academic and discipline issues. If an athlete simply wanted more playing time, Ferentz has been known to work with them on a transfer even when he wanted to keep them. The classic case was Jake Rudock.</div><div><br></div><div>In basketball, Barta told McCaffery, when he was hired, to not force anyone out, and that cut down the wholesale transfers under Licliter. That does not mean Fran does not sit down with individual players at the end of the season and explain where they are in the pecking order for playing time and what they will have to improve to see the court. Both Hutton and Fleming were behind other players and that led to their transfer decisions. Fleming wanted to be a go to guy and transferred to a smaller school to fill that role.
