He was not an average defensive lineman. He would have been a star there too. His high school coach saw him as a star at center and so did Iowa's offensive line coach. 
High School coach: 
"He said with conviction, and on the record, that Linderbaum would be a star at whatever position he played in college." 
" The position switch hardly came as a surprise to Miller because he was convinced that Linderbaum had all the skills and intangibles to be a great center."

Offensive line coach Tim Polasek: 


"Offensive line coach Tim Polasek has frequently looked at his team’s defensive linemen and thought about them on his unit. He did that with Linderbaum last fall. 

“You want to work with that type of aggressive athlete that can obviously run and move his feet the way he does being an inside-, outside-zone kind of team. From that standpoint, he is a good fit,” he said."

Somebody remind me again who is responsible for the genius move that brought Linderbaum from an average defensive lineman to the OL as center. What did they see in him that indicated stardom at center? Stuff like that really intrigues me since I am a total idiot regarding such things.
