Iowa's Luka Garza has been named AP national player of the year. First Hawkeye to win that honor.

AP Top 25 voters were the ones that made this pick. My ballot (only one in Iowa) had Luka at the top.

There have been stories that Kris Murray was more of an inside player and other stories that he was more of a small forward. When he was at prep school, he seemed to play mostly inside and did not have a good three point shooting %. He was listed at 6'7 1/2", 1/2" shorter than Keegan, and 10 pounds lighter when they were signed last year. Now they are both listed at 6' 8" and 215 pounds. More current stories suggest Kris is more of a 3/4 while Keegan is described as a 4/5. Kris is now described as a better three point shooter, but that does not match prep school statistics. His father Kenyon says Kris has a quicker first step and is a better jumper. If Kris could get better and more consistent as a sophomore, it would help the Iowa basketball team where ever he plays.

Iowa has contacted an athletic 6'8" division II transfer from a South Dakota school, Parker Fox, but so have many others. Minnesota may be the favorite. There just is not much size available from JUCO's and small schools, so Iowa may end up playing small ball next year. Kris, Keegan, and Patrick McCaffery need to hit the weight room hard.

Thought I'd read a story that Chris Murrary was more of a Center than forward. Anyone recall that? Even at 6-8 6-9 he'd be a bit undersized IMHO.

A transfer portal or transfer from a smaller school is the only other option right?

There are over 1000 names in the portal but few quality big men as Scott pointed out. Jack Nunge created a lot of initial excitement in the transfer market until people realized he would want to be close to his home in southern Indiana. Nate Reuvers of Wisconsin and Myles Johnson of Rutgers are two Big Ten centers on the list. Johnson is transferring for the right reason; he wants a top flight graduate engineering school in his major. Most mid majors don't have much size so aren't viable candidates to pick up transfers from. Kegan Murray may be Iowa's center unless they get lucky. We'll see how much and how fast the staff can improve Josh Ogundele.

I would think it’s a “yes and” situation. I just can’t believe that a kid would progress as much as he did from year 1 to year 4 with no gain in development at all from the existing staff. If you look back, Iowa has had plenty of big guys improve. Kriener improved. Aaron White improved. Nicholas Baer improved. Adam Woodbury improved. Jarrod Uthoff improved. I think it’s also true that Luka had another gear and access to more training through his father and there’s no question that also contributed mightily.

Curiosity question;
Luka’s improvement over his 4 years was a result of his off-season work ethic and his dad or was there any of the development due to a big-man coaching from Fran’s staff?
I believe we could land a very good player if the latter is true but may struggle to attract if the former is true.
Either way, Fran deserves credit for utilizing the skillset.

14 men classified as CENTER on the NCAA Transfer Portal. 3 already have
school picked. Several 7 footers.

1-5 star Kessler from NC

3-4 stars

8-3 stars

1-2 star

1 no rating--Patrick Tape Duke Immediate.

I'm guessing the ratings were their HS rank.

Slim pickings out there.

Anyone know a website for JUCO players, graduating sophomores?
