Subject: [Herky] NCAA WRESTLING TOURNAMENT - Day Two

I was going to be pretty negative but then I saw the seed to placement info and realized that they did not do terrible. Iowa will have 6 All Americans (finish in the top 8) and all of them are back next year. The two biggest items are that Spencer Lee is back in the finals after getting revenge on Piccininni (OK ST) who pinned him 3-4 weeks ago. The second is that Marinelli, who was the number one seed, will wrestle for 7th place today.

I don't think I have ever seen Spencer as excited as he was after winning that match. It has been a long year for him and to get back to the finals when less than 100% is great.

Marinelli had, by far, the toughest draw for a #1 seed that I can remember. He lost a close one to Lewis in the quarters who is a very good defensive wrestler and stalled the entire match. Lewis got a TD at the end when Marinelli made a dumb move in the final second to give up a TD. In his last match I think he just ran out of gas against a really tough wrestler.

It is possible for Iowa to finish third but most likely they will finish 4th.

Other notable matches:

    * Gable Stevenson who everyone was crowning a 4 time champ before he wrestled a match in college lost in the semi-finals.
    * Myles Martin (Ohio State), who has been dominate this year lost in the semi's.
    * Nichols (PSU) continues to dominate. He is far and away the most exciting wrestler in college right now.
    * Nolf (PSU) got a gift from the ref when they waved off (after review) what was an obvious TD by everyone else. Even Nolf admitted it was a TD after the match.. Had Hidley gotten the TD he would have been ahead 3-2. He ended up losing 3-2. I am sure Nolf would have wrestled differently if he was behind so he might still have won but I really would have liked to see it as Nolf looked very human in this match.
    * UNI puts one in the finals - Foster at 197

Spencer 3-seed : 1/2
Desanto 7-seed : 3-6
