[Herky] BIG Ten Wrestling Championships - Day One

Not that I am an expert but here are my thoughts on why Iowa is where they are now.

  1. Talent is number one. If Iowa had the PSU guys they would be dominating just like PSU is. Tom and Terry may not be Gable but they are as good or better than any other coach out there now as far as coaching up talent. Where they have not been as good is recruiting.
  2. Other teams have caught up to Iowa in many things. The third period used to be Iowa's. Conditioning was a major factor for Iowa. That is no longer the case.
  3. Injuries/Illness have limited or taken out 3 of the best Iowa guys this year. Lee, Kemmerer, Stoll.
  4. Mindset? - Maybe it is just lack of talent but too many of these guys just do nothing for the first period or so. Seems like they are just trying to keep it close so they have a chance in the 3rd when they hope the other guy is tired. They need to attack from the beginning. Mark Ironside said on the radio that what you do in practice you do in the match. I wonder if they do the same thing in practice instead of using that time to be aggressive, to try new things, to learn they just hand fight and grind because they don't want to get taken down. I thnk they are too afraid to lose instead of going out to win. I think that was what made Gable so great. He knew the buttons to push for each wrestler individually to get them to really believe that they could win a national championship.
  5. Bottom position - My memory may be bad but I don't remember teams being able to ride Gable's guy. Now it seems like a lot of guys get ridden a lot. Other teams like to use legs on top (not sure why Iowa does not) and Iowa really struggles with that.

I miss the days when Iowa won the B1G and the National championship every year. I’m guessing other schools have caught up with us in wrestling and surpassed us.

Thanks for an excellent summary, Jeff

So what is missing on this team? Talent? Technique? Effort?

Day one is over and PSU is dominating as expected with 6 in the finals I think most Iowa fans will be pretty disappointed overall with today's results. Pretty mixed results. They have 2 in the finals and 5 still alive in the consolations. Saddest thing is that the two seniors had their careers end today. Bowman and Stoll both are done. Stoll was a shell of himself - too many issues with his knees. Really sad as he deserved better.

Positives:
125 - Lee is in the finals and looks better. I am not sure he can beat Rivera tomorrow but hopefully two more weeks of recovery will get him far enough along that he can compete for the championship.
165 - Marinelli beats Wick for the 3rd time and gets Joseph in the finals.

Negative - Too many matches with few to no shots by the Iowa wrestler. And in many of those matches they lost by a point or two. Not a surprise because we have seen this all year but still disappointing.

It will be interesting to see how they react tomorrow and whether they can at least finish 3rd.
