[Herky] Convince me otherwise

Kirk said what I was thinking but could not come up with the words yesterday - Stanley is aiming the ball

Q. When you watch the tapes on Sundays, what have you observed with Nate and maybe why he's struggling a little bit early, especially in terms of accuracy?

KIRK FERENTZ: Yeah, I think he looks like he's pressing to me a little bit. I've never played quarterback. I did throw one pass -- yeah, one pass in 10th grade. I completed it, too. I didn't have my contacts in and I couldn't see. I just hauled it out and some guy caught it; it was a miracle. That's a long story, we won't go there. But I did throw one pass in my life, but I'm not a passer. But I know a little bit about throwing a baseball, and you can't aim a ball, I know that, when you throw something. I think he's doing a little bit of that right now, trying to be too perfect, and then the points earlier we're just not quite there in terms of sync. Just going to keep working at it. There's no pixie dust or pill we give a guy or something like that. It's just working through it and developing confidence.

This is probably not a good time for me to respond when the last QB I watched was Aaron Rodgers in the second half for Green Bay last night. Here is a guy who had zero mobility because he was hurt but still had enough pocket presence to move around to buy time to find a receiver. For many of the completions the receiver had no separation. Now obviously comparing Stanley to one of the top 3 QB's of all time is not fair but is does highlight the two main issues with Stanley. He does not have a very good pocket presence and he is not consistently accurate. I am not sure if the pocket presence is something you just have or don't but I have not seen much improvement in this area.

My theory on his accuracy. Stanley's default has always been to use his strong arm and throw a rocket. Putting touch on a ball is not natural. So he is still learning how to make that throw. And when to make each type of throw. This may be causing him to think too much rather than just throw naturally. Whether pitching a baseball or throwing a football that will hurt your accuracy.

What Stanley is much better at is commanding the offense. The pass to Smith that set up the TD was an audible. (It was also a perfect pass). Mansell would not be doing that at this point in his career.

I watched some of the Tyler Weigers game and he did not look better than Stanley to me. Different type of passes - lots of easy short completions. I still do not understand why Iowa does not throw to their RBs more. They have one catch in 2 games.

Agreed. Plus Stanley doesn't seem to be improving. That indicates to me that he has topped out at his talent level. If not, why doesn't he improve? Is the QB coach not doing a good job?

It's very concerning to me. I'm sticking with 7-5. But I hope I'm wrong.

Well we don't really have a second team quarterback right now, so we really can't have a quarterback controversy. If Tyler Wiegers had stayed perhaps we would. Wouldn't you like to have a quarterback with these statistics?

We only have 3 quarterbacks on scholarship and the other two are a red shirt Freshman and a true Freshman. Both Peyton Mansell and Spencer Petras look promising, but are they ready to play the game management system Iowa uses? The sad thing is this lack of a backup will probably happen again. As upperclassmen, whomever of Mansell or Petras does not start will probably transfer.

All,

I am not a pessimist by nature, but I am very convinced that Nate Stanley is a liability (and the receivers, to a lesser degree). I did not see him making solid reads, he looked uncomposed at times, threw uncatchable balls under no real pressure, does not really run when that should be an option, and throws 5 yard passes when 8 yards is needed. If this keeps up, I hate to say it but he will be the primary reason we lose games moving forward. The receivers, as I mentioned, may not be getting separation, but I cannot fault them for the passes being spot on (except for the pass to Fant in Week #1).

I am not advocating for a QB change (yet), but this is going to get real serious, real quick if there is not a significant change in his ability to be a field general.

Convince me otherwise, PLEASE!
