I think it could be that Coach Fran is basically and offensive coach and
just didn't emphasize the other end enough.  He learned his lesson that
unless you focus you lose focus.  In prior years they got by, last year it
caught up with them.

 

Just my very humble opinion.

In football, it's sometimes said that good tackling is largely about desire
- a mental attitude.  It's probably something that applies to basketball
defense as well.  

 

That said, coaches can obviously teach defense tactics and strategies.  And,
as Jeff points out, reward good defensive performance.  I think they'll get
it figured out this season.
