[Herky] Iowa basketball’s season-long disappointment shows up at news conference

Waiting till next year for a conference championship and/or deep run in the NCAA. There has been no discussion, in my memory, of waiting for a winning team.

We have had some really good moments, only for those teams to completely fade to oblivion late in their respective years.

IMNSHO, it would be folly to seek a new coach at this time.

Considering McCaffery’s teams have averaged about 22 wins (including 10.2 wins in the conference) for the 5 seasons leading up to this one (plus tourney bids in each season), I haven’t heard any talk of “but wait until next year.”

Until I saw the post below.

Well it would be quite difficult to do worse than finishing dead last in the conference after six years as head coach. This after losing only one player from last year and adding several respected recruits. I am completely tired of saying “but wait until next year”.

I respectfully disagree on the lack of progress. While I am disappointed in the regressive results this year, I am happy with the progress from the dark days of Lickliter. I see the present situation caused by two things. First, both the Junior and Senior classes have been comparative busts, with the best player from that group being a walk-on (Baer). Defensive communication is something learned with time and playing together. The constant deep rotations don't help in that regard either.

Second, Iowa's recruiting focus has shifted to shooting and away from defense. The two players coming in next year are both known as great shooters so probably won't help the defense much. There is a lot of talent coming in the next few years, but we will see if they can play defense.

I’m not one to lightly call for a coach to be fired, but after 6 years we haven’t seen much progress. I’m definitely in apathy mode at this point when it comes to basketball (at least the men’s team)

It’s been amazing how many times this team has been burnt so easily in half court and in transition. They don’t communicate well, their reaction times are on a 1/2 second delay, they get way out of their positioning set ups, they get beat on dribble-drives to the baseline and paint often, and just look flat-out confused on occasion. Wasn’t Speraw a coach who, in part, was brought in because of his defensive expertise? He’s got a lot of work to do, along with any other assistant who is interested in defense. .

Just don’t get it. In the good years, the teams had major free falls that could not be explained. This year’s failure cannot be explained, given the talent.

After all these years, I cannot figure out how Fran’s teams look like they are not communicating. It’s been better of late, but by now they have forgotten how to win.
