[Herky] Interesting stat for Iowa men's hoops

I don’t know how much lack of speed and quickness has impacted defense more than scheme and strategy. It doesn’t matter what team we play, when we go to zone, opponents end up with wide, wide open people in three point range. I’m sure teams plan for this because our guys get so far out of position. After a wide open three kills us, I back up the recording to watch what happened. Time and again our defender has sagged way into the lane area our just outside. It doesn’t take a Magic Johnson to find a shooter camped out with no one within ten feet.

Time after time after time. I’ll take court presence, position and a good scheme any time over speed.

Before the season started, assistant coach Andrew Francis said that they have changed their recruiting to focus on good shooters, because it is hard to teach that. So they shoot well. Bohannon is a great shooter but lacks the lateral quickness to stay in front of a quick guard, especially with his plantar fasciitis heel injury. Cook fouls when he plays hard defense, so plays soft defense to avoid fouling. Conner McCaffery has more length than Bohannon, but lacks the lateral quickness to stop drives by speedy guards. Iowa's 2 recruits next year, Joe Weiskamp and C.J. Fredrick, are known first and foremost as "great shooters". So the primary hope for improved defense next year is going to be from improved communication and team defense. with an extra year of maturity. Fran McCaffery has said he is looking for a "defensive stopper" who can also shoot for 2019.

After today’s blowout loss to tOSU, Iowa’s FG shooting percentage for the season is 47.8%. That is the highest team FG pct since Tom Davis’ second to last season (97-98), when that team connected on 48.0% of their shots.

Just imagine if this team played defense! With their length and wingspans, it seems to me they could (should) be more of a defensive-oriented team. Let’s hope Connor McCaffery is a super-defender on the perimeter next year and some changes are made to get this team to learn and stress defense. I don’t know anything about the new recruits coming in, but I hope there is at least one guy who is a defensive specialist and will quickly learn all the techniques and nuances of playing D at the next level.
