[Herky] Fran McCaffery unplugged: In-depth with the Hawkeyes coach on what derailed Iowa's season

Cook didn’t seem too interested in playing defense at times, probably because he didn’t want to rack up fouls. He definitely was more energized on the offensive end.

Poor spacing and communication were problems on the defensive end. Baer was not getting in front of his man on several occasions. Wagner played hard, but was matched up with bigger guys too much. Moss seemed to play good defense only when he was playing well offensively.

I think Garza will be an above average defender. He learned a lot last season.

really? Lack of effort? Actually that is what many commenters insinuated but that is disheartening

It’s very simple to me. Take away all the tech speak and you are left with one big word—lack of effort (yogi speak). Defense requires superhuman effort. Forget the X’s and O’s. Without effort there is nothing. Effort resuts from conditioning, communication, understanding and all the other buzz words. I’m not saying why effort was so inconsistent, I’m just saying it wasn’t there much of the time.

Also, I agree with Fran’s comments about 3 point shooting. Even though the offensive stats look good, the three’s didn’t come enough to allow the Hawks to dominate.

My theory on why Iowa's defense was so bad this year are youth and plantar fasciitis. I don't think most of us realize how much the foot injury impacted Jordan's defense. I don't know that he will ever be a great defender but I do think he can at least slow the other PG down. This last year they went by him like he was standing still.

Coaching can always be better but when they had Woodbury, Clemons, Uthoff, and Gesell they were not bad on defense. Did they forget how to coach defense over the last few years.

  Yes.

He knows the team had deficiencies on defense for many reasons, including ineffective coaching.

He’s right about the talent he’s got. But I was shocked how poorly they played on D in conference play.

Does any of this make sense to those of you who know basketball?
