Thanks for the insight, Curtis, Jeff and others. It's a great
way for those of us in the hinterlands to keep up the knowledge.

All,

Sorry I missed the show, but I was out of town and did not have
access to Herky.

First, thank you to Jeff for the great updates - I know it isn't
easy, but it is a great read!

As for Jeff below, you (as always) make some great points. Here
is my 2 cents worth (worth even less).

Yes, we are losing some firepower and some hammers. However,
please do not be discouraged. We are re-loading the cannon next
year with some of the best recruits in the country (Spencer Lee @
125, Jacob Warner @ 197, Max Murin@ 141, Aaron Costello @ Hwt,
Justin Stickley @ 133-149, as well as some gifted next tier guys
like Myles Wilson @ 174 and Zach Acmear @ 149). Not to mention
that we have Gavin Teasdale coming in the following year at the
lower weight as well. We have some studs in the room that didn't
wrestle this year in Sam Stoll, Alex Marinelli and Vince Turk.
And the remaining 5 in the lineup from this year are pretty
qualified and have some great experience under their belts. The
message - the cupboard isn't empty.

Just say to yourself "I am not expecting much in 2017 for Iowa,
but watch out 2018!", because these recruits need to bake a
little longer before they are ready to come out of the oven. A
redshirt year for them will position us greatly to compete (and
beat) PSU in 2018. So follow the team next year, but set your
expectations in a rebuilding year mentality, because even if we
started every one of these guys, PSU is returning 6 potential
champions (Suriano, their 125 lb guy who injured his ankle -
would have been a contender as a freshman). Next year is our
chance to watch and learn wrestling as a sport.

It pains me to say, but Sanderson has put together an incredible
lineup (still 4th best behind 2 previous Iowa teams and an OSU
team, though). Some of the best wrestlers I have seen who know
how to wrestle through the whistle and for 7 full minutes, with
bonus points on the mind in every match (are you listening,
Brandon Sorenson?). Look for Sorenson and Kemerer to do great
damage next year, as well as Stoll. We just may not have a
champion until the following year.

How's that for lipstick on a pig!

Let's start with the good news. Cory Clark wins a national title.
The toughness he showed wrestling with the injured shoulder and
being able to compete at that level is amazing.

Now the bad news as Jeff talked about in the previous email. PSU
won all five of those matches including two where they knocked of
#1 seeded defending champions who were undefeated. Add Suriano
and you have 6 guys who will probably be favored to win the title
next year.

Next year Iowa will be down losing Gilman, Clark, Carton, Meyer,
and Brooks from this team. And the problem is that their best
guys (Sorensen, Kemerer, and Marinelli) are at the weights that
PSU has national champions. When I look at the match-ups PSU
could very well shut out Iowa when they meet for a dual.

Iowa is doing a much better job of recruiting and in two years
they will probably have 4 guys who were top 10 pfp coming out of
high school in the line-up. This is still not close to what PSU
is doing but much better than they have now.

Now for my annual rants at the end of the season. First I
appreciate that ESPN streams every match and they have increased
the amount of coverage on tv. But I grow tired of the obvious
bias toward PSU. Certainly they will get more attention since
they have five guys in the finals but when the guy doing the
interview after the matches is leading the We are Penn State
chant they have crossed the line. Just like it would not be
appropriate for him to end his interview with Clark with Go
Hawks. And they are interviewing former PSU guys and putting
tweets from them on tv.

The other thing I noticed is this year they did not list the
other place winners. Normally at the end of a weight they will
put up a list of all eight guys. These guys work so hard all
year. Give them a few seconds of recognition on tv.

As far as the wrestling itself they still need to do something
about stalling. I watched too many matches where one guy takes
0-1 legitimate shots the whole match and while the other guy
takes 5-10 good shots yet no stalling or stalling is called with
20 seconds left when it makes no difference. For all the talk
about PSU's exciting wrestling they would have two less champions
if they called stalling as Joseph and Hall both stalled to wins
in the semi finals. There is also way too much riding that is
just to ride with no attempt to turn the guy. I could go on with
other areas where stalling is not called. About the only thing I
know for next year is that PSU will be very dominate and nothing
will be done to address these needs.

One other thing that I would like to see changed is the challenge
system. There are way too many breaks due to challenges. Put a
penalty to a challenge that does not get reversed. Award a point
to the other guy or give him choice similar to what they did with
injuries to stop the abuse of guys being injured to get a rest
break.

Jeff, thanks for all the updates and stats. Iowa should be pretty
well assured of taking home the fourth place trophy, which is
about the best result we could have expected. I'd made a comment
earlier about what I think is the lack of progress around the
Iowa program. We haven't been a factor in the team race since our
last title in 2010 (the last year of the Virginia Tech class).
I've been tracking the top eight teams in the tournament and here
are some facts: Iowa returns 38.5 tournament points to next
year's team. Contrast this with Oklahoma State returning 80, Ohio
State with 106 and Penn State with 117.5. This is before any
points are added in during the finals and the Penn State total is
without any contribution from Suriano who was injured. Looks like
a pretty steep hill to climb in the near term.

My understanding is the tonight's finals will start at 197,
meaning it's like a Penn State dual meet for the last five bouts.
Fans may want to turn down the sound on ESPN for those matches
and listen to the radio call from Penn State. Jeff Byers is
definitely a home team announcer but he gets pretty fired up and
is entertaining to listen to. You can find the link to the
broadcast on the Penn State website and it's free to listen to.

It looks pretty good for Iowa to get a trophy (top four get
trophies). Missouri has 3 in the finals but they are huge
underdogs in two so they probably only get one 1st which
hopefully Iowa can match.

Gilman wins and finishes 3rd. According to the announcers much
of the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Clark wins his match and is the only Iowa guy in the finals. If
not for that I would say this round was a total disaster. Gilman
loses his first match of the year. Sorensen and Brooks get stuck
in the first minute of their matches against PSU opponents. Meyer
and Wilcke lose their match and are eliminated. Kemerer wins two
matches and stays alive in this battle to try and take 3rd. It
is really ridiculous how much better PSU is than Iowa. They win
all five of their semi-final matches. Not sure what the team
score record is but PSU might come close. If they had Suriano I
think they would beat it. And PSU will be better next year.
