[Herky] Iowa - FL

Last year was a once in a lifetime season. Like I said the margin for error is very small but if you have the type of schedule they did and everything goes almost perfectly well then you can go 12-0. But a few plays here and there and 12-0 could easily have been 9-3. The schedule was also very favorable.

Ferentz after the game.

"I think our team has really had a good month. They practiced well, prepared well. I'm not sure there's a thing I would go back and change. Ultimately today we just didn't play well enough to come up with a victory against a good Florida team, so we certainly give them credit, salute their effort out there, and congratulate them."

So the fault all lies with execution. I don't think that is a true statement. There was one guy on the field that clearly was not executing -Beathard in the second half. He was hurt and unable to execute but Ferentz continues to play him.

>From an article:

But the medical staff said he could play. Beathard certainly wasn’t going to voluntarily stay on the sideline, and Ferentz didn’t think it was the right move, not with everything Beathard meant to the program.

“We certainly owe it to him,’ Ferentz said. “He’s had a tremendous career and laid it out there for us game in and game out.”

No you do not owe it to him. You owe it to the team and the fans to put the best guys out there who give you a chance to win. A Beathard who cannot move and cannot throw because he can step into the throw gives you no chance to win. Stanley may not do any better but he does give them a chance.

And to be clear I am talking mainly about the offense. The defense has consistently been better than average under Ferentz. The defensive scheme seems to work pretty well for the athletes Iowa has. They have consistently been a top 20 defensive team. So when they don't play well you may be able to point to execution. I think you saw the improvement of the defense over this season as they executed better. Snyder improved in his execution over the season and Gair executed better than Taylor. But again the scheme, coaching, execution has produced good results for the whole time Ferentz has been here.

The offense is a completely different story. It has consistently been below average under Ferentz. How many times has Iowa had an offense ranked in the top 20? One? Yet no changes are needed. Coaches are not part of the problem. Just execute better.

How did we go 12-0 then with the same coaches? I know nothing about X's and O's

Some of the things that I can think of that fall on the coaches:

- recruiting - no one will say we have done a good job in this area esp. at WR. We do not expect top 10 rankings but they should be able to consistently have top 30 teams. Iowa is normally in the 40's or 50's.

- schemes - Do we have schemes that take advantage of the type of talent we do have? We seldom throw down the middle. We seldom throw deep (do it once in awhile for nothing else but to keep the defense honest). We throw short passes that require someone with TX quickness to make people miss. We don't have this. By throwing short we allow the safeties to play close to the LOS. This makes executing the running game which much harder. When the other team has 9 guys in the box you may execute well and still not get any yards on a run.

Play calls - We are very predictable. We play not to lose rather than play to win.

Getting the best guys on the field - Seniors play. More talented guys seem to have a hard time getting on the field. Wadley is our best player but all Ferentz can say about him is that his weight is 3 pounds less than they want and that he had an issue with fumbling 2 seasons ago. And you know that had an impact on how much he played. And it is this type of stuff that may well cause him to declare for the draft. We don't seem to be able to coach up the more talented guys and get them on the field where they can contribute.

Because of these coaching deficiencies Iowa needs to execute at a very high level. Our margin for error is very small. So yes I think a lot more falls on the coaches than you seem to be willing to admit.

Exactly. For some fans, when we lose it's the coaches' fault, but when we win it's in spite of the coaching.

Absolutely ridiculous that Beathard played in the last 3 series especially when it is obvious he is not trying to win.

This is just abuse now. Like letting a guy with a concussion go back in the game

Ferentz wants a fair and open QB competition going into the spring. Playing Stanley gives him an unfair advantage.

Another bad pass by Beathard. He is throwing behind receivers all day. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say it is injury related. Obvious that Beathard cannot run at all. Time to play Stanley. But I expect Ferentz will be stubborn.

I would wonder what Iowa's run game would be like if they had enough passing to keep teams from having 9-10 guys in the box. Two good drives and zero points to show for it. I am even more pessimistic now.

That hurts. They proved me wrong and drive down the field and then come up with nothing. Add to that Beathard is hurt. He was showing the most mobility I have seen this season. His passing accuracy has been very poor this game.

I think Iowa better hope for about 3 more TO's or they will lose. Not sure where Iowa will get any points if they have to drive down the field. FL may not be able to run but they have had WRs wide open down the field. What a huge mismatch when you have Snyder on a FL WR.

I thought the call was 50-50. What ever the call was on the field would stand. Not sure why the targeting was not reviewed - sure looked like helmet to helmet.

And 3 points to show.

IMHO that incomplete pass was a bad call. Should have been catch and fumble recovery.
