12/5/16It’s like this: There are 20 former Iowa Hawkeyes on NFL active rosters as of Monday morning. Fourteen of them are interior linemen, counting deep snapper Casey Kreiter of the Denver Broncos.
Nine (I count Kreiter among them) are offensive linemen. Five are defensive linemen. Then you have three linebackers, two tight ends and a defensive back.
There used to be more DBs, but Bradley Fletcher and Charles Godfrey recently ended NFL careers of seven and nine years, respectively.fairly long NFL careers.
That Iowa has no former quarterback, running back or wide receiver on an active roster is, well, whatever you want to make it. Former Hawkeye quarterback Jake Rudock is on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. Ricky Stanzi never threw a pass in an NFL regular-season game, but is without an NFL team for the first time since being a Kansas City Chiefs’ fifth-round draft pick in 2011. Stanzi was employed by five NFL teams, three of which had him on the practice squad only.
Stanzi tried out for the New Orleans Saints a week ago but wasn’t signed.
Here is the breakdown of Big Ten players and players from Iowa colleges on NFL rosters:
Ohio State 37, Penn State 29, Wisconsin 25, Michigan State 23, Nebraska 22, Iowa 20, Michigan 18, Rutgers 14, Maryland 13, Illinois 12, Purdue 11, Indiana 9, Northwestern 8, Minnesota 8.
Northern Iowa has six and Iowa State four.
Here are the 20 ex-Hawkeyes on NFL rosters, the three on practice squads, and the one on injured reserve. If I have any omissions (things change quickly in that league), please let me know and I’ll update this.
