> After 5 games, we have a reasonably good idea about about the 2016 Hawkeyes - slightly better than Rutgers and worse than Northwestern, which would suggest a team in the bottom half of the conference. This after losing very few key players from a 12-2 team. Yet again, high pre-season expectations result in a dismal letdown. It's hard to expect much improvement the rest of the season because both lines, in fact the front 7 on D, get out-played and out-physicaled routinely. We have two absolute studs on D in King and Jewell, but not much else. On offense, CJB is struggling; people have pointed out the weak line and possibility of injury, but he has flat out missed critical throws.
> Unfortunately, as fans of the Hawkeyes we've seen this all too often. I am perplexed by Barta's decision to extend Ferentz contract through 2026. He is willing to pay top dollar for average results? He's basically saying to Ferentz and the fans that he considers Ferentz body of work as among the best in the business. He has been good, but not great - a good run 2002-2004 and mostly average much of his tenure. Ferentz was already in a lucrative long-term contract, why not let it complete or keep extending it to maintain a 4-year window if he merits it? The length and terms of his contract should provide perennial top10 finishes nationally and national title contender occasionally. Will Iowa reach that level in the next 10 years under Ferentz? I'm not hopeful.
