[Herky] USA Today study of university athletics

I would think that your assessment is correct, but the Athletic Dept isn't
exactly giving the money to the school. They are paying for a service, like
any other bill.

What bothers me is that some one and done schools have their athletes take
up a seat in classes that may be desired by serious students. Not saying
athletes are not serious students, but it is safe to believe that one and
done-ers care more about basketball than the classroom.

How much do these schools give back to the universities general fund in
paying for tuition and fees? The school may give the athletic department $5
million but doesn't the athletic department turn around and gives it right
back to cover tuition?

So the Iowa department lost money in 14-15. Are subsidies the funds that
the educational institution had to put in the athletic account to help pay
bills? Some amounts are very large. Even Iowa's athletic dep't had to go
to the well. Or am I missing something?

Snipped the Big Ten data. Sorry, I'm sure this will come out weirdly for
most of you (though I sent it to myself as a test and it came out fine).
