I do not know which universities you are describing but do not use a broad brush when describing state universities in Illinois.

Our universities, particularly state universities, are often very poorly run. The unbelievable escalation of tuition over the past two decades is unconscionable. I am frequently dismayed by the inefficiency and utter lack of accountability displayed by both admistrative folk and instructors alike. At both colleges that my kids went to last year, they had several classes in which they had no grades at all at mid term. Another instructor (not at Iowa) changed the grading criteria after finals and when my daughter tried to protest it quoting the actual faculty manual, she was pretty much blown off. Of course there is the age old book rip-off. I could write a book on issues in my doctoral program. Higher education will not survive if it continues in the same old ways. I think someone from outside the club may need to get things on the right track, like Mitch Daniels at Purdue. Maybe this guy is not the right one but there needs to be change. Just to end on a positive note, by far Iowa is one of the best schools to deal with on all levels.
