[Herky] Iowa AD believes fully that Ferentz is the right guy | FOX Sports

I am going off memory and I don't follow the other sports very closely so I am probably wrong.
Curtis has a good list of results and I think they indicate that overall we are doing better now than we did in previous years. There are exceptions like Softball and Field Hockey. Volleyball, Men's BB, Baseball, Soccer(?) are all examples to me of where Barta's first hire did not work out so he moved on and it appears to me that the current coach in each sport is better than the previous one. There are still some sports where his current hire is not good and he will need to try again.
When I Iook at his track record I have little confidence in Barta making a good choice for the next football coach. The positive for Barta is that when he does not make a good hire he seems to cut his loses and move on. You can get away with this in the minor sports but not the big ones. BB was set back for 5+ years. Iowa cannot afford to have this happen in football.

Ok

I will bite

Women’s bball did not hire

Baseball - yes

Track - too soon but the program lost their best distance runner (Kayla Beattie) (transferred to AZ where she was PAC 12 newcomer of the year) and did not even try (much) for the best high jumper in years from Illinois (Wisconsin) (yes I knew both girls and I am bitter)

Field hockey - No

Wrestling - not yet could have a very long discussion about this but NO

Men's basketball - yes there was no where to go but up but need more

Volleyball - no

Rowing - no

Anyone else want to chime in? In a good natured Hawkeye family way?

I think Barta is on record as saying that he wants to contend for championships in all sports. I am not convinced Barta is very good at identifying top coaches but he doesn't seem to stay with them for very long if they don't get results. Over time he has put together a pretty good collection of coaches who are getting better results. The exception is Ferentz where he is stuck due to the contract length and terms.

And yet none of the so called experts (sports writers) ever mention our lousy over-all performances. If Barta has goals for each of his teams they are very low. Perhaps he has none. Here are mine: for all teams except FB: every team in every year finish in the top ½ of the conference and once in every 3-4 years contend for the championship; FB: every year finish no worse than 3rd in the division and every 3rd year, win the division. If coaches don’t accomplish these goals, they are fired. I acknowledge that a new coach deserves additional time to get his program to this level. Dave McCoid

In 7 of the last 10 years, Iowa finished last of the Big Ten in the directors' cup. (thru 13-14) I looked up 14-15 through April and we were 8th out of 14. (31st)
4 big 10 teams were in the top 10.
When was the last time we won a Big title of any kind? Track I think a couple of years ago?

While this is not the leader in the conference, I certainly would not say we were worst, or even among the worst. Several sports had solid years. Some sports had miserable years. Some had outstanding years. The only thing missing from this list is National Championships. Other than a few elite programs, (Ohio State being the most obvious choice this year), you won’t find many ‘multiple’ championship teams at the same program consistently.

I have no problem pointing out our flaws, but let’s also give a fair representation. We have a long way to go, but we are not digging out of a hole here.

That is shame on us, myself included. We have now arguably the worst or among the worst overall athletic program in the conference and we just keep shelling out money.

Barta's not going anywhere, he raises oops and gobs of money. About what he says about Ferentz, what do we expect him to say? Ferentz isn't what he used to be but I'm giving him another year or two? I don't think he will throw Ferentz under the bus quite yet.

Probably not a good sign if AD feels it's necessary to throw bouquets to fans to try to boost the rep and credibility of a coach after, lo, so many years in charge😇!
