So we should look to not a salary cap, but a spending cap, based on TV revenue or something? All the pro sports have some sort of spending limit to encourage parity.
Under the table cash payments to athletes should be considered in the cap. :)

Donations are actually up. TV revenue will soon, if not already, matter more than ticket sale revenue.

There definitely has been mixed results with the athletic teams this year, but football definitely financially subsidizes the majority of these sports. Winning in the Olympic sports doesn't help financially. Even with the recent success and support for baseball, I would be surprised if the expenses were lower than revenues. Everything I've read (and the internet is always right) states that donations and football tickets are down this year due to consecutive under performing years of the football team. Even though college athletics is "amateur," we are fooling ourselves if we don't think of this as a business and the Athletic Director is the CEO. If football can no longer support the other sports, Barta is ultimately accountable.
This will be an interesting year with the football team and the downstream effects.
Hopefully, the team surprises and exceeds expectations.
On Iowa!

While this is not the leader in the conference, I certainly would not say we were worst, or even among the worst. Several sports had solid years. Some sports had miserable years. Some had outstanding years. The only thing missing from this list is National Championships. Other than a few elite programs, (Ohio State being the most obvious choice this year), you won’t find many ‘multiple’ championship teams at the same program consistently.
I have no problem pointing out our flaws, but let’s also give a fair representation. We have a long way to go, but we are not digging out of a hole here.

That is shame on us, myself included. We have now arguably the worst or among the worst overall athletic program in the conference and we just keep shelling out money.

Barta's not going anywhere, he raises oops and gobs of money. About what he says about Ferentz, what do we expect him to say? Ferentz isn't what he used to be but I'm giving him another year or two? I don't think he will throw Ferentz under the bus quite yet.

Probably not a good sign if AD feels it's necessary to throw bouquets to fans to try to boost the rep and credibility of a coach after, lo, so many years in charge!
