[Herky] Basketball PAST

I was there with you at Market Square Arena. Had a blast with my then 13 year old son. We walked out after the loss to Louisville and had to run a gauntlet through fans wanting our final game tickets. No way, we came to see basketball and wouldn’t give the Looovll fans the satisfaction of using our tickets.

I believe Iowa lost to Purdue in the consolation game—Joe Berry Carroll made and a** of himself after the game by mocking Lute.

A few weeks later I met Lute on a flight from Tucson to Dallas and we became friends. I did some recruiting around the New Orleans area and we and our wives would meet up whenever we came back to Iowa. Someday I will share the story of our Dinner at Antoine’s in New Orleans during the ’82 Final Four.

25 years ago I was fortunate to be in the crowd for the Final Four game in Market Square Arena with the Hawkeyes playing Louisville. It was a very good game with Ronnie Lester matching basket for basket against Darryl Griffin. Then Ronnie landed awkwardly driving to the bucket and reinjured his knee - The Hawks couldn't win without him so they lost to the eventual champ. We also had tickets for the consolation and championship games. After Iowa played in the first game - and I don't remember whether they won or lost - we walked outside during the break and sold our ticket stubs which gained entry to MSA for the championship game for 4X their face value. We then walked to a nearby bar and enjoyed numerous pitchers of beer while watching it on TV.

Lute Olson had Iowa flying high but the winters got to his wife so they eventually ended up at Arizona. Lester never quite regained his superb quickness so was just OK in the NBA. Jordan liked him which probably didn't hurt to lengthen his career.

Have been to several other Final Fours since but nothing has matched the excitement of seeing the Hawkeyes playing in it.

I'm very fortunate to live in Indianapolis which is a great sports city.

Go Hawks!

Steve
